Shama Mohamed’s Past Comments on Virat Kohli Resurface Amid Rohit Sharma Controversy

Congress leader Shama Mohamed's past criticism of Virat Kohli resurfaces amid backlash for her remarks on Rohit Sharma’s fitness and captaincy.

Shama Mohamed’s Old Criticism of Virat Kohli Resurfaces Amid Social Media Backlash Over Her Remarks on Rohit Sharma’s Fitness and Captaincy

The Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed has landed in trouble for her remarks on Kohli, echoed again now in the wake of her fat and unimpressive labels for current captain Sharma. Her criticism of Kohli in the 2018 post claimed that “Virat Kohli plays a British game” while calling out his endorsements and personal life choices.

By November 2018, Kohli had triggered a huge controversy for his remarks against a fan who commented on the enjoyment of watching the English and Australian batsmen more than Indian players. Kohli sharply reacted, saying, “I dont think you should live in India; go and live somewhere else. Why are you living in our country and loving other countries?” It birthed a whole debate on nationalism concerning sports that received mixed reactions from the public.

In Shama view, Kohli had contradicted himself. She, therefore, criticized him on his lifestyle, saying, “Virat Kohli plays a British invented game, makes crores from endorsing foreign brands, gets married in Italy, names Herschelle Gibbs his favorite cricketer & Angelique Kerber the best tennis player but says those who love foreign batsmen should leave India.” With this statement, she founded herself under debate on social media, with many defending her view, while she was condemned by others for unfairly targeting Kohli.

Fans of cricket are now linking her resurfaced comments on Kohli to her recent remarks on Rohit Sharma. She had trash-talked Sharma fitness in a now-deleted post on X (formerly Twitter), stating that “Rohit Sharma is fat for a sportsman! Need to lose weight! And, of course, the most unimpressive Captain India has ever had!” From the post, she questioned Sharma’s decisions and compared him unfavorably against past Indian captains Dhoni, Ganguly, and Kohli.

The remarks did not sit well with fans, who accused Mohamed of being biased against champion Indian cricketers. Social media is awash with reactions from people who questioned her intentions. One user remarked: — “First Virat Kohli, now Rohit Sharma — does Congress have a problem with every great Indian batsman?” Another person asked: — “Why are you always so critical of our national heroes?”

In response to the backlash, Mohamed came out and defended herself, saying her comments on Rohit Sharma were only about fitness and not body-shaming. She insisted on expressing her opinion in a democracy, adding, “I just spoke in a generic manner and failed to understand why I am being attacked for it”. However, otherwise, her critics felt that rather than being coincidence, there appears to be a pattern to these selective criticism of Indian cricketing legends.
