The family of Nilam Shinde who is a 35-year-old Indian student from Satara, Maharashtra received U.S. visas to support her after she fell into a coma because of a hit-and-run accident in Sacramento, California.
Maharashtra Woman’s Family Receives US Visa Amidst Coma Crisis
The family of Nilam Shinde who is a 35-year-old Indian student from Satara, Maharashtra received U.S. visas to support her after she fell into a coma because of a hit-and-run accident in Sacramento, California. The tragic event took place on February 14th 2025 when Nilam encountered a speeding car while she was walking on Fair Oaks Boulevard. The collision resulting from the incident led to grave injuries which broke both her legs and her left arm in addition to causing a traumatic brain injury that required immediate medical surgery and rendered her unconscious.
Lawrence Gallows received arrest from the Sacramento Police Department as authorities connected him to the incident. The speeding driver Gallows ran from the accident spot before police captured him through their thorough investigation. 
The family of Nilam struggled to obtain prompt visas after learning about the car accident. The family received an unrealistic appointment for the next year despite the urgent situation. Family attention was successfully gained which prompted NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule to approach the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) regarding intervention. The U.S. embassy accelerated its visa procedure after her father and brother underwent an interview at the U.S. Consulate in Mumbai. 
The Consulate General of India in San Francisco keeps in continuous contact with the hospital and family members and friends and offers maximum possible help. The organization reveals its plan to keep giving support to Nilam and her family while they face these difficult circumstances.
The postgraduate student Nilam studied at California State University who obtained her BE in Computer Science from Sinhgad Institute in Pune before working for a year at NASA. Her studies in the United States maintained her focus on engineering research that she had started as a student in Pune. Such an event exhibits the urgent need for immediate compassionate reactions in emergency conditions.
