Yamuna Cleanup Drive Kicks Off Post BJP’s Electoral Win, L-G Sets Firm Deadline
Efforts to clean the Yamuna River begin after BJP’s Delhi poll win, with a structured plan and strict deadlines set by the Lieutenant Governor.
Yamuna Cleanup Drive Begins After BJP’s Delhi Election Victory, Lieutenant Governor Sets Strict Three-Year Deadline
Following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) win in the Delhi elections, cleaning of the highly polluted Yamuna River began on Sunday. The authorities have come up with a detailed four-pronged strategy to make sure that the river is considerably cleaned in three years.
Pollution of the Yamuna River has been one of the key political issues of the election campaign, with the BJP alleging that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had not lived up to its promise to revive the river. Now that the elections have been over, the BJP government has started large-scale cleaning operations. Trash skimmers, weed cutters, and dredge utility units were rolled out on Sunday, marking the beginning of the massive cleanup drive.
Strategic Action Plan
Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, on Saturday, held discussions with the Chief Secretary and the Additional Chief Secretary (Irrigation and Flood Control) to expedite the river cleaning process. A multi-faceted strategy has been rolled out to tackle the pollution crisis effectively.

The four-pronged strategy includes:
Debris and Silt Removal: A concerted effort is being made to extract trash, silt, and other pollutants from the Yamuna.
Drain Cleaning Operations: Concurrent cleanup operations are underway in large drains, such as the Najafgarh and auxiliary drains, which are major contributors to the pollution of the river.
Sewage Treatment Overhaul: Round-the-clock monitoring of the capacity and efficiency of current sewage treatment plants (STPs) is being done. In addition, new STPs and decentralized STPs are being built to meet the current deficiency of treating almost 400 MGD (million gallons per day) of sewage.
Regulatory Monitoring: The Delhi Pollution Control Committee has been mandated to ensure that no industrial units discharge untreated waste into city drains and thus avoid further river pollution.
Coordinated Efforts Across Departments
Officials emphasize that the ambitious drive for cleaning up needs smooth coordination between different agencies, such as the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Delhi Jal Board, Irrigation and Flood Control Department, Environment Department, Public Works Department, and the Delhi Development Authority. These agencies have been directed to coordinate with each other to implement the plan successfully.

“The objective is to restore the Yamuna within three years, which calls for stringent monitoring, timely interventions, and an uncompromising stance against violators,” stated an official from the Lieutenant Governor’s office.
With a firm deadline now in place, Delhi’s administration is under pressure to deliver on its promise of a cleaner Yamuna. The success of this initiative will be a crucial milestone in addressing the city’s longstanding water pollution crisis.
