India and the US Forge a MEGA Partnership: PM Modi and President Trump Set $500 Billion Trade Target and Strengthen Strategic Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, after bilateral talks with US President Donald Trump at the White House, announced a new vision for India-US relations. Taking a leaf out of Trump’s popular election campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again” (MAGA), Modi proposed “Make India Great Again” (MIGA), indicating a robust and strategic bilateral relationship between the two nations.

Referring to a joint press conference, PM Modi laid stress on convergence of MAGA and MIGA when he declared that the two of them were to become a “mega partnership for prosperity.” He highlighted that under this “mega spirit” there was going to be opening up new vistas of cooperation and economic progress.

“Americans are familiar with President Trump’s slogan ‘MAGA – Make America Great Again’ well enough. Similarly, Indians also believe in their glorious past and robust development. They want to be ‘Viksit Bharat 2047.’ In this regard, ‘MIGA – Make India Great Again’ will go hand in hand with MAGA so that it becomes a partnership mega both in size and effect,” said PM Modi.

Reaching a $500 Billion Trade Target

One of the key items on the agenda at the meeting was the ambitious goal of pushing India-US trade to USD 500 billion by 2030. PM Modi and President Trump reaffirmed their commitment to vigorously increasing bilateral economic and trade relations.

“Now that we have set a target to double our bilateral trade to USD 500 billion by the year 2030. Our negotiators will make their most concerted efforts to clinch a win-win trade pact at the earliest,” Modi declared.

The two leaders also advocated for co-transfer, co-production, and co-development of technology to enhance the two economies. Energy security was also high on their agenda with PM Modi vowing that India and the US will enhance oil and gas commerce and enhance energy infrastructure investment.

“In the nuclear arena, we are tightening our cooperation, particularly for small modular reactors. America is very vital for Indian defense preparedness and in the times to come new equipment and technology will enhance our capability,” Modi added.

Strengthening Strategic Ties

Besides trade, the two leaders also touched on sectors of heightened cooperation in defense, technology, and investments. PM Modi was thankful for the role played by Washington in the security climate of India and was optimistic for increased defense cooperation in the future.

Modi held a meeting with Musk, who is a billionaire entrepreneur, when he was visiting, further reiterating India’s interest in fostering innovation and new technologies. The meeting was just hours after President Trump announced new retaliatory tariffs against all countries, including India, a turning point in a consideration of economic strategies.
