The over pressure during JEE preparation led to a distressing number of student suicides which now affects India. JEE aspirant Aditi Mishra ended her life at 18 years old following her failure to pass the exam which she reported through a heartbreaking note that said “Mummy and Papa I am sorry please forgive me because I failed.” I couldn’t do it.” Students experience extreme anxiety alongside major stress as a result of their examination preparation before the Joint Entrance Examination.
The story of Aditi concerns multiple instances across India. Data shows that she studied for the JEE for two years before learning she failed to achieve qualifying results. The expectations from her parents stood tall above everything else which she believed amounted to failure in their eyes. Students endure emotional weight because they believe their parents have unmet expectations according to the note they wrote.
The tragic event triggered broader discussions among the community about supplying more accessible mental health services and different career counseling for young people. According to experts the extreme pressure students face during competitive examinations leads to significant emotional burdens and therefore they need encouragement to develop their non-academic interests as well. Parents together with educators need to establish supportive settings that will encourage student emotional development as well as resilience.
