Kapil Sharma’s ‘Kabaddi’ Joke Resurfaces Amid Ranveer Allahbadia’s ‘Parents’ Controversy, Sparking Debate on Comedy and Social Sensitivities
The recent furore over Ranveer Allahbadia’s remark on India’s Got Latent has brought back debates over limits in humor. As anger mounts over his inflammatory comments, a vintage joke by Kapil Sharma has come back into the limelight, evoking mixed reactions on social media.
The joke, which is from Comedy Nights with Kapil, was a popular show on Indian television. At one of the shows, Kapil Sharma commented on two things that Indians are very fond of—cricket and movies. Taking a lighter note, he indicated how kids would get up at 4 AM to watch a cricket match. He then joked, “Cricket ka match shuru hona tha 4 baje, aur phir yeh maa baap ki kabaddi dekh ke so jaate hai” (The cricket match was to start at 4 AM, so they sleep after watching their parents’ kabaddi).
Although the joke is ancient, it has rekindled controversy in recent times following Ranveer Allahbadia’s recent comments. Social media websites have been inundated with varying views. Some users condemned Kapil Sharma, contending that his joke, although appearing harmless, also had inappopriate connotations. Yet others came to the defense of the comedian, highlighting the situational difference between his joke and Allahbadia’s overt statement.
One Reddit user posted, “Kapil is clever and funny. ‘Kabaddi’ may indeed refer to a parents’ fight. He told a bad joke and let the audience’s imagination run. Ranveer, however, enunciated and stressed a bad joke merely to appear cool.”

This return to the earlier joke comes in time with the latest outrage aimed at Ranveer Allahbadia, otherwise called BeerBiceps, over a tasteless question he made to a participant during an India’s Got Latent episode. Reportedly, he asked the participant a gutter-level question using parts of the human body and offered to commit an indecent act for Rs 2 crore. But the situation got out of hand when a clip from the show revealed him presenting a contentious dilemma: “Would you watch your parents have sex every day for the rest of your life or join once to stop it forever?
The comment was met with outrage on social media, with people registering their disgust. The outrage increased after the video went viral, attracting the ire of public figures, such as politicians and film personalities. With the controversy gathering steam, a police complaint was registered against Ranveer Allahbadia and some co-judges like Samay Raina, Ashish Chanchlani, Jaspreet Singh, and Apoorva Makhija.
As a reaction to the growing outrage, Ranveer Allahbadia apologized for crossing the limits with his statements. His colleague judge, Samay Raina, also retaliated by taking down all of India’s Got Latent videos from YouTube as an apparent attempt to contain the backlash.

Although the two episodes exemplify the thin line between humor and offense, they also reveal the evolving sensitivities of audiences down the years. What was once dismissed as a joke years ago is now being reassessed in terms of current social mores. The question is: where do comedians and creators of content draw the line between humor and insensitivity? As the debate continues, the controversy surrounding Ranveer Allahbadia serves as a reminder that in today’s digital age, words can have lasting consequences. Whether it is a joke from the past or a comment made in the present, the internet never forgets—and neither does public scrutiny.
