Veteran actor Ashutosh Rana has returned to theatre after 24 years with the play Humare Ram, where he plays the role of Ravana. The play, which has been performed over 160 times since last year, presents the Ramayana in a respectful and authentic manner. Rana believes that portraying Ravana does not necessarily mean showing him as a villain.
Speaking about his experience, Rana said that playing Ravana has been a dream role for him. He emphasized that while many see Ravana as a negative character, Humare Ram presents him with depth and dignity without altering the original story. “We haven’t made any changes to the Ramayana. We have only focused on presenting it in the right language and with respect,” he explained.
The actor highlighted the importance of staying true to the original storytelling of epics like the Ramayana, as they hold deep emotional significance for people. “Ram has a certain way of speaking, and so does Ravana. Every character must be portrayed with grace. We cannot misinterpret their words or actions because people feel a strong connection to these stories,” he said.
Rana, who also won the Sahitya Akademi Award for his book Ramrajya (2020), shared that his aim has always been to convey messages that are authentic and free from unnecessary dramatization. “These epics were passed down through generations to uplift people. It is our duty to narrate them with respect and accuracy,” he added.

Despite his busy schedule with Humare Ram, Rana is actively working in films as well. He was recently seen in Loveyapa and also has a role in Chhaava, a film starring Vicky Kaushal, which releases this week.
When asked how he balances theatre and films, Rana said that he sees no difficulty in managing both. “Acting is my passion, whether it’s for theatre, films, or any other medium. If you love what you do, that is the greatest form of freedom and happiness,” he said.
With more shows of Humare Ram scheduled in Mumbai next week, Rana continues to bring his powerful performance to audiences, ensuring that the epic of Ramayana is presented with sincerity and respect.
