PM Modi’s France visit strengthens AI, defence, nuclear ties, and trade, boosting India-France relations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a three-day visit to France, marking his first bilateral trip to the country in his third term as PM. His visit is packed with important meetings, major deals, and efforts to strengthen relations between India and France.

Warm Welcome and AI Summit

On his first day in France, PM Modi received a warm welcome from French President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee Palace in Paris. The two leaders shared a hug before attending a formal dinner. The next day, PM Modi co-chaired the AI Action Summit with President Macron. This summit focuses on artificial intelligence and aims to promote ethical, accessible, and sustainable AI technology.

President Macron stated that India and France are working together towards tech sovereignty, meaning they want to develop their own AI models instead of depending on the US or China. Over 100 countries, along with top tech leaders and scientists, attended this summit.

Defence and Nuclear Energy Agreements

PM Modi’s visit also focuses on strengthening defence and nuclear energy ties. One of the most significant deals expected is India’s purchase of 26 Rafale-M fighter jets for the Indian Navy. These advanced jets will operate from India’s aircraft carriers INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya, improving the country’s maritime security.

Additionally, India is set to sign a deal for three more Scorpene-class submarines to strengthen its underwater defence capabilities.

On the nuclear energy front, PM Modi and President Macron will visit the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) in Cadarache. This global project aims to develop clean nuclear fusion energy, and India is a key partner. India has also made changes to its nuclear laws, which could lead to more cooperation with France and the US in the civil nuclear sector.

Cultural and People-to-People Connections

PM Modi’s visit is not only about trade and diplomacy. He will travel to Marseille, a historic French city, to pay tribute to Indian soldiers who fought in World War I. He will also join President Macron in inaugurating India’s new consulate in Marseille, which will strengthen ties between the two nations.

Another major topic on the agenda is the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). This project, first announced at the G20 Summit in Delhi, aims to connect Mumbai and Marseille via West Asia, boosting trade and connectivity.

India and France may also launch a Triangular Development Cooperation initiative focusing on climate and sustainable development in the Indo-Pacific region.
