India loses at Critics Choice Awards as All We Imagine As Light and Citadel: Honey Bunny fail
India’s hopes at the Critics Choice Awards 2025 were dashed as Payal Kapadia’s highly acclaimed film All We Imagine As Light failed to win the Best Foreign Language Film award. The film, which won the Grand Prix at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, was considered a strong contender but lost to Emilia Perez, starring Selena Gomez. Another Indian nominee, Citadel: Honey Bunny, also lost in its category.
All We Imagine As Light Loses to Emilia Perez
The Indian film was competing against Flow (Latvia), I’m Still Here (Brazil), Kneecap (Ireland), and The Seed of the Sacred Fig (Germany). Despite being a fan-favorite, All We Imagine As Light missed out on the award. Earlier, the film had also lost at the Golden Globes 2025.
Adding to its setbacks, All We Imagine As Light was not submitted as India’s official entry for the 2025 Oscars. Instead, the Film Federation of India selected Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies (Lost Ladies), which also failed to secure an Oscar nomination.
The winning film, Emilia Perez, a Spanish-language musical crime thriller directed by Jacques Audiard, has been in the news for both its success and controversy. The film’s lead actor, Karla Sofía Gascón, was absent from the awards ceremony after her past controversial social media posts led to criticism.
Citadel: Honey Bunny Loses to Squid Game
India’s second nominee at the Critics Choice Awards was Citadel: Honey Bunny, starring Varun Dhawan and Samantha Ruth Prabhu. The Amazon Prime Video series was nominated for Best Foreign Language Series but lost to the global hit Squid Game. Other nominees in the category included Acapulco, La Máquina, The Law According to Lidia Poët, My Brilliant Friend, Pachinko, and Senna.
