In order to influence voters leaders of the major parties held roadshows public gatherings padayatras and bike rallies during the arduous campaigning for the February 5 Delhi assembly election which came to an end Monday night.
After canvassing ended the required silence period started which will continue until Wednesdays voting begins at 7 a. m. Political leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi AAPs Arvind Kejriwal and Congress Rahul Gandhi have been leading the campaigns in the capital since the announcement of the poll schedule on January 7.
As the BJP accuses Kejriwal of corruption and the AAP highlighted its accomplishments in healthcare and education the political battle grew more intense. The AAP and BJP both made promises of lavish Chhath Puja celebrations and Bhojpuri campaign songs in an attempt to win over Purvanchali voters, a sizable voting bloc in Delhi.
Both parties accused one another of manipulating votes during the campaign while Kejriwal accused the BJP Election Commission and Delhi Police of banding together to thwart AAPs efforts.
Delhi election 2025 date
The Delhi assembly election is set for February 5 2025 and will be held in one phase. The results will be counted on February 8 2025.
With 699 candidates running in 70 seats these elections are seen as a referendum on the AAPs leadership and the BJP and Congress prospects in Delhi over the following five years.
The 70-member Delhi assembly’s term ends on February 23. Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party is running for a third consecutive term. Nonetheless the BJP is stepping up its attempts to take back control. The Congress which had allied with the BJP and AAP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections is also running on its own and is aiming to defeat both parties.
According to the Delhi Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) 13766 polling places are open to 1 point56 crore eligible voters. Among them are 1267 voters of the third gender 72. 36 lakh women and 83. 76 lakh men.
733 polling places have been set up specifically for people with disabilities in order to guarantee accessibility. The Queue Management System (QMS) app was also released by the Election Commission enabling voters to view the current number of people lining up at polling places.
Important Candidates
In his re-election, former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal is running from the New Delhi seat against Congressman Sandeep Dikshit and BJP candidate Parvesh Verma.
In the Kalkaji constituency AAP candidate Delhi Chief Minister Atishi faces off against BJP candidate Ramesh Bidhuri and Congressman Alka Lamba.
Manish Sisodia of the AAP is vying for the Jangpura seat against Tarvinder Singh Marwah of the BJP and Farhad Suri of the Congress. Karnail Singh of the BJP is running against senior AAP leader Satyendar Jain in Shakur Basti.
A teacher-turned-politician named Awadh Ojha is running for the AAP this year against Congressman Anil Chaudhary and BJP candidate Ravinder Singh Negi.
Somnath Bharti of the AAP will run for the Malviya Nagar seat once more competing against Jitendra Kumar Kochar of the Congress and Satish Upadhyay of the BJP.
Delhi election 2025 political campaigns
The AAP BJP and Congress engaged in a heated debate during the 27-day campaign for the February 5 Delhi assembly election. Topics covered included Sheesh Mahal vs. Rajmahal poisonous Yamuna Bin Dulhe Ki Barat freebies and personal attacks. The liquor scam and Sheesh Mahal were used by the BJP and Congress to attack Kejriwal.
In response the AAP ridiculed the cost of Modis home calling it the Raj Mahal and accused the BJP of causing law and order problems under Union minister Amit Shah.
Modi called the AAP AAP-da (disaster) for the city and argued for its overthrow during his rallies.
The AAP responded by branding the BJP as the “Gali Galauj Party” because of the purported “abusive language” used by BJP leader Ramesh Bidhuri.
Kejriwal sparked outrage by alleging that the Haryana BJP government “tainted the Yamuna water” heading to Delhi, charging them with trying “genocide” in the city and plotting a “scheme” to instigate a water shortage.
Freebies
The AAP responded by branding the BJP as the “Gali Galauj Party” because of the supposed “abusive language” used by BJP leader Ramesh Bidhuri.
In their election manifestos, all three parties concentrated on providing freebies, each promising monthly payments of ₹2,100-2,500 for women, complimentary healthcare for seniors, and free electricity allocations.
AAP and BJP contested energetically to win over voters, with AAP pledging monthly allowances for temple priests and gurdwara granthis, complimentary bus rides, and initiatives for youth, students, and auto-taxi drivers.
Both Congress and BJP committed to offering cooking gas cylinders for ₹500. The BJP pledged ₹21,000 for pregnant women, whereas Congress proposed ₹8,500 monthly for jobless youth.
Security beefed up for February 5 poll
As per an official report released on Monday, over 30,000 police officers and 220 paramilitary units have been deployed throughout Delhi for the assembly election on February 5.
During a press conference, Special Commissioners of Police (Law and Order) Madhup Tewari (Zone-II) and Ravindra Yadav (Zone-I) talked about the security measures for the elections.
“Every Delhi Police officer is dedicated to upholding free, fair, and peaceful elections.” “The arrangements for the pre-poll have already been finalized,” stated Special CP Ravindra Yadav.
Yadav emphasized the unprecedented confiscations of drugs, alcohol, and money, mentioning that close to 3,000 polling stations have been identified as sensitive. Enhanced security protocols, such as drone monitoring, are implemented for these booths.
“Yadav added that extra police personnel will be sent to sensitive booths, and Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) will be positioned to uphold law and order.”
