A US Army Black Hawk helicopter crashed into an American Airlines passenger jet mid-air over Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C. The sad incident has created a heated political row. Former President Donald Trump reacted to the situation by questioning Obama-era diversity hiring policies he blamed for undermining aviation safety. On the other side of things, investigators say they have located the black box for the passenger jet, the first step toward untangling the cause of the disaster.
Deadliest Aviation Disaster Since 2001
The fatal collision sent both planes crashing into the Potomac River, where all 67 people on board are presumed dead. As of Thursday afternoon, rescue teams had recovered more than 40 bodies from the river, CNN reported. The authorities refer to this as the deadliest aviation disaster in the United States since 2001.
The National Transportation Safety Board managed to acquire the black box, which makes up the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder, following prolonged recovery efforts and an investigation that is ongoing. Trump blames DEI policies for FAA shortcomings
This brought about a national debate on the role of DEI programs within the Federal Aviation Administration. He attacked the Biden administration for hiring in aviation and aerospace with regard to diversity rather than competence or safety.
“I put safety first. Obama, Biden, and the Democrats put policy first,” Trump said. “They actually came out with a directive: ‘Too white.’ And we want the people that are competent.”
He believed that hiring should be purely based on qualifications and not on demographic representation. He accused former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg of appointing underqualified people, some of whom have disabilities and mental health conditions, to critical FAA positions.

FAA Leadership Under Scrutiny
As a reaction to the crash, Trump appointed Chris Rocheleau as the acting administrator of the FAA. The move may herald changes in FAA policies, such as hiring and safety standards. According to analysts, under Rocheleau’s leadership, the agency will have to come under greater scrutiny over its hiring practices.
Trump claims that the FAA compromised its safety measures due to the embracing of the concept of diversity. He says, “The FAA is aggressively hiring workers with severe intellectual disabilities, psychiatric problems, and other mental and physical conditions under a diversity and inclusion hiring program.”
Investigative Review of the Final Moments Before the Accident
Reuters’s preliminary reports claim that the air traffic controllers had warned the incoming passenger jet that a Black Hawk helicopter was headed in its direction, asking the helicopter to change course. Nevertheless, it still crashed with the passenger jet. The black box recovered in the accident will enable investigators to conclude whether failure in communication, human error, or technical faults caused the crash.
Much of the political fallout is likely to be over the comments made by Trump because the nation is mourning the devastating loss of life. Aviation safety and hiring standards have become the central focus as this investigation unfolds.
