A tragic midair collision occurred last night between an American Airlines regional jet and a military helicopter near Washington’s Reagan National Airport, with no confirmed survivors reported yet. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the accident took place about 9 p.m. ET while the plane was approaching the runway.
The American Airlines flight 5342, that left Wichita, Kansas, was crashed into a US Army Black Hawk Sikorsky H-60 helicopter by itself, with it having sixty people aboard including the four crew members. Three men were aboard on the helicopter in which the aircraft had been shot into after they left Fort Belvoir, Virginia for training the Pentagon reported.

Immediately after the air traffic control gave the aircraft clearance, flight data records a sharp fall over the Potomac River just before crashing into the water. Search and rescue teams are immediately deployed that include the D.C. Fire Department, local police, and U.S. Coast Guard, with reports that 18 bodies have already been recovered with no signs of survivors, CBS News reported. The authorities continue to dig out more victims from the crash site.
All flights at Ronald Reagan Airport were suspended in the aftermath of the tragic accident. The American Airlines Chief Executive Officer, Robert Isom, issued a statement condemning the tragic accident and pledged to cooperate fully with the National Transportation Safety Board in its investigation. The newly confirmed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that the Pentagon is following the situation closely. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, based at FAA headquarters, said that his department was following the events.

U.S. President Donald Trump issued a statement expressing condolence to the victims and appreciating the speed of the action of first responders. “May God bless their souls. I am monitoring the situation and will provide more details as they arise,” he said.
Senator Ted Cruz confirmed the death toll but could not divulge how many people were killed. “While we don’t yet know how many on board were lost, we know there are fatalities,” Cruz posted on X.
The country is in a state of mourning over the tragic death toll as it waits for more information about one of the worst aviation accidents in recent history.
