DeepSeek, China’s revolutionary AI model, has taken the tech world by storm, surpassing major players like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude AI. It has become the most downloaded free app on the Apple store, even shaking the US stock market. One of the key figures behind this success is Luo Fuli, a 29-year-old AI researcher known as an AI prodigy in China.
Luo Fuli’s journey into artificial intelligence was not easy. She started at Beijing Normal University, where she initially struggled with computer science. However, through hard work, she excelled and later secured a position at Peking University’s Institute of Computational Linguistics. In 2019, she made a name for herself by publishing eight research papers at the prestigious ACL Conference, which focuses on advancements in natural language processing (NLP).
Her groundbreaking work attracted tech giants like Alibaba and Xiaomi, where she contributed significantly to AI development. At Alibaba’s DAMO Academy, Luo led the creation of a multilingual pre-training model called VECO and played a crucial role in AliceMind, an open-source AI project.
In 2022, Luo joined DeepSeek, where her expertise helped develop DeepSeek-V2, an AI model capable of competing with ChatGPT. Her success did not go unnoticed—Xiaomi’s founder, Lei Jun, later offered her an annual salary of 10 million yuan ($1.4 million), as reported by the South China Morning Post.
