Due to a non-bailable warrant issued in a cheque bounce case, Ram Gopal Varma was given a three-month jail sentence
Renowned filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma (RGV) has been sentenced to three months of simple imprisonment by the Andheri Magistrate Court in Mumbai in connection with a cheque bounce case. The case dates back to 2018 and was filed by a company named Shree through its representative, Maheshchandra Mishra.
Conviction Details
The court found RGV guilty under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, which penalizes cheque dishonour due to insufficient funds or exceeding the account’s limit. Alongside the jail term, the director has been ordered to pay ₹3.75 lakh as compensation to the complainant. Failure to pay this amount within three months will result in an additional three months of imprisonment.
The magistrate clarified that there would be no set-off under Section 428 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, as RGV was not in custody during the trial. The case has been ongoing for seven years, and a non-bailable warrant has also been issued against the filmmaker.
RGV’s Response
Ram Gopal Varma, who was apparently missing from the hearing, responded to the news on X (previously Twitter). He added that the story concerning him and Andheri court is related to a 7-year-old lawsuit of ₹2 lakh 38 thousand involving an ex-employee. My solicitors are handling it, and because the case is in court, I can’t say anything more.

Upcoming Projects
The filmmaker recently announced a new project titled Syndicate, describing it as a terrifying story about an organization threatening India’s existence.
