Subhas Chandra Bose Jayanti: Celebrating the Visionary Leader and His Contributions to India’s Freedom Struggle
Subhas Chandra Bose Jayanti is to be celebrated every year on 23rd January. It is one of the most renowned anniversaries of birth days of India’s freedom fighters, Subhas Chandra Bose. He is popularly known as “Netaji.” The unrelenting spirit and indomitable will to India’s independence and such a singular leader have left their mark in the nation’s history. This day serves as a call to recollect those contributions, which could not have been matched, and inspire people with his ideas of patriotism, bravery, and selfless service.
Early Life and Academic Brilliance
Subhas Chandra Bose was born in 1897 in Cuttack, Odisha. He was an extraordinary intellect and leader right from his boyhood days. He passed his degree in Philosophy from the University of Calcutta and later proceeded to England for higher studies. There, he topped the Indian Civil Service (ICS) examination with the fourth rank. However, a passion to liberate his motherland from British rule prompted him to resign from ICS, which was also testimony to his very strong commitment towards freedom movement.
Growth as Revolutionary Leader
In order to enter Indian politics, Bose’s entry changed the course of the country in its fight towards independence. Earlier associated with the Indian National Congress, he emerged as a very influential leader, known well for his extremist approach. When most contemporaries at that time believed in non-violent resistance, he believed it was the need of the hour to achieve independence through armed struggle, which at times even put him up for many controversies in front of other leaders and Mahatma Gandhi.

In 1938, Bose became the President of Indian National Congress as a testament to his rising popularity and influence in politics. However, he resigned the following year on political differences of ideas and started the Forward Bloc party, consolidating all opposition parties against Britain.
Setting Up INA
Perhaps Bose’s greatest contribution to the freedom struggle was that in World War II he formed the Indian National Army (INA). He had aligned with the Axis powers to help him displace the British colonialists from the Indian subcontinent. This famous battle cry, “Give me blood, and I will give you freedom,” inspired thousands of Indians to become part of INA to fight for their motherland. In pursuing this goal, INA led by Bose started direct campaigns in Northeast India opposing the British. He was able to call forth the spirit of nationalism among Indians several times when his military campaigns were repulsed, and he infused a new purpose in the movement.
