JD(U) Withdraws Support from BJP-led Government in Manipur

JD(U) ends support for BJP-led Manipur government, citing defections and alignment with INDIA alliance

JD(U) withdraws support from BJP government in Manipur, cites defections and INDIA alliance ties.

The Janata Dal (United), led by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has officially withdrawn its support for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in Manipur, headed by Chief Minister N Biren Singh. The announcement was made on Wednesday through a formal letter issued by Kshetrimayum Biren Singh, the president of JD(U)’s Manipur unit.

The letter, addressed to Chief Minister Biren Singh, declared that the JD(U)’s lone MLA in the state, Md. Abdul Nasir, would now be treated as an opposition MLA in the Manipur Legislative Assembly. “It is, hereby, further reiterated that Janata Dal (United), Manipur Unit does not support the BJP-led state government in Manipur, and our lone MLA, Md. Abdul Nasir, shall be treated as an opposition MLA in the House,” the letter stated.

The JD(U) leadership highlighted the defection of five of its six MLAs to the BJP following the 2022 Manipur Assembly elections. The letter noted that the matter is still under review by the Speaker’s Tribunal under the Tenth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, which deals with anti-defection laws.

The decision to withdraw support comes after the JD(U) joined the INDIA alliance, a coalition of opposition parties seeking to challenge the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the national level. The party conveyed its decision to withdraw support to the BJP-led government in Manipur to the state’s Governor, Chief Minister, and Assembly Speaker.

Further, the letter mentioned that the Speaker had already made seating arrangements for Md. Abdul Nasir in the opposition benches during the last Assembly session.

The withdrawal of JD(U)’s support marks a significant political development in Manipur, where the BJP has faced growing challenges. The move also reflects the JD(U)’s national strategy to consolidate its position within the INDIA alliance while distancing itself from the BJP in various states.
