Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar got himself involved in the most significant diplomatic affair by attending the first Quad meeting under the newly inaugurated Trump administration. He was followed up by a highly productive bilateral meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio who had just taken over.

First Bilateral Meeting between S. Jaishankar and Marco Rubio

Within an hour of Marco Rubio’s oath-taking as Secretary of State, he held his first official bilateral meeting with S. Jaishankar. This extensive discussion, which lasted over an hour, highlighted the Trump administration’s priority on strengthening ties with India. India’s Ambassador to the U.S., Vinay Kwatra, was also present.

Dr. Jaishankar later posted on X, “Delighted to meet @secrubio for his first bilateral meeting after assumption of office as Secretary of State. Reviewed our extensive bilateral partnership, of which @secrubio has been a strong advocate. Also exchanged views on a wide range of regional and global issues.”

Spokesperson Tammy Bruce let it be known that the two nations were willing to reach an extra mile and expand strategic partnership. Other topics covered in discussions included: Topics such as; critical and emerging technologies, cooperation in defense energy, ensuring the free and open Indo-pacific. Secretary Rubio pointed out, the Trump administrations focus areas. These are moving forward in increasing economic relations with the other countries besides dealing with the irregular migration issue

Soon after the inauguration of the 47th U.S. president, the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting brought together leaders from India, Japan, Australia, and the United States. In attendance at the meeting, besides Jaishankar, were Japan’s Takeshi Iwaya and Australia’s Penny Wong, with Secretary Rubio hosting the session.

Dr. Jaishankar described the meeting as productive and emphasized its significance, considering it took place mere hours after the new administration’s inauguration. On X, he noted, “Significant that the Quad FMM took place within hours of the inauguration of the Trump Administration. This underlines the priority it has in the foreign policy of its member states.”

The discussions at the meeting centered on the Indo-Pacific that is free, open, stable, and prosperous with a shared commitment to intensify cooperation. According to Dr. Jaishankar, the Quad aims to be a force for global good in an increasingly uncertain and volatile world.

The event concluded with the four foreign ministers posing for a symbolic group photograph, which underlined their unity and shared vision.

Engagements with U.S. Officials

During his visit to the United States, Dr. Jaishankar also met U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz at the White House. This interaction, along with his engagements at the Quad meeting and with Secretary Rubio, signifies a robust and forward-looking trajectory in India-U.S. relations.

This landmark visit underlines the shared aspirations of the Quad nations to promote stability and prosperity across the Indo-Pacific while reinforcing India’s pivotal role in global diplomacy.
