PM Modi Emphasizes Collaboration and Innovation While Reviewing Six Major Metro Projects Across Indian Cities

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently reviewed the progress of six metro train projects, emphasizing the growing significance of metro systems as a preferred mode of public transport in urban areas. These projects, spanning major cities like Delhi, Patna, Bhopal, Indore, Agra, and Kanpur, represent a significant stride toward sustainable urban mobility.

It calls for knowledge sharing workshops between metro cities currently launching or planning, as the meeting encourages cities to learn from the experiences of their peers. “We should help such cities to develop best practices as well as come up with methods to better understand challenges so as to have appropriate solutions in future,” he mentioned.

Among the highlighted projects, Delhi Metro’s Phase IV is a major development. It includes six new corridors spanning approximately 107 kilometers. Recently, the PM inaugurated the first 2.8-km stretch between Janakpuri and Krishna Park, a project valued at ₹1,200 crore. Additionally, the foundation stone was laid for the 26.5-km Rithala-Kundli section, which connects Delhi to Nathupur in Haryana, with an investment of ₹6,230 crore.

Another major project in Patna Metro is set to be completed soon with a stretch expected to be launched later this year. This 6.4-km elevated route between Bairia bus terminal and Malahi Pakadi is going to be a very significant milestone for Bihar’s public transport infrastructure.

The metro projects in Bhopal and Indore are moving ahead well in Madhya Pradesh. Bhopal Metro is scheduled to open a 7 km stretch from Subhash Nagar to AIIMS Bhopal by July this year, as part of the planned 31 km network. Indore Metro on its priority corridor has a stretch of 5.9 km between Gandhi Nagar and station number three of the Super Corridor.

Agra Metro has already operationalized a 6-km section of its network. The full Phase 1 project, comprising a 14.25-km corridor from Sikandra to Taj East Gate, is targeted for completion by 2026, promising enhanced connectivity for the city’s residents and tourists alike.

The Kanpur Metro project, which saw limited operations last year, is set to expand significantly. The new corridor from Motijheel to Kanpur Central station will connect key areas, including IIT Kanpur, to the city center. Trial runs for this segment have already commenced, signaling imminent operational readiness.

These metro projects are more than just infrastructure developments; they symbolize India’s commitment to modernizing urban transport while addressing environmental challenges. By fostering collaboration among cities, sharing expertise, and learning from past experiences, the government aims to ensure that each metro system becomes a model of efficiency and sustainability.
