Rahul Bhat Praises Directors for Casting Talent Over Social Media Popularity
Rahul Bhat praises Kashyap, Motwane for casting talent, not social media fame, in films
Rahul Bhat credits Kashyap, Motwane for valuing talent over social media popularity in casting decisions
Rahul Bhat, known for his exceptional performances, is currently receiving praise for his role in the web series Black Warrant. Directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, the project came Bhat’s way after the filmmaker watched his earlier work in Anurag Kashyap’s Kennedy at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
Motwane was impressed by Kennedy and offered Bhat the role in Black Warrant soon after returning from the festival. “The work I did with Anurag [Kashyap] influenced him,” shared Bhat, who has previously collaborated with Kashyap on Ugly (2014) and Kennedy.
Reflecting on his experience with both directors, Bhat noted their unique yet complementary approaches. “They have different voices but are creatively similar. Both create an environment where actors can thrive. Vikram works tirelessly—always on his toes. When I told this to Anurag, he laughed. It doesn’t mean Anurag doesn’t work hard, but Vikram has a different kind of energy,” he said with a smile.
In a career spanning over two decades and only 10 films, Bhat admits that being cast by directors like Kashyap and Motwane feels special, especially in an industry heavily influenced by social media presence. “Today, casting decisions are often about who has the most social media followers or who’s considered trendy. But directors like Anurag and Vikram don’t care about any of that. They don’t care how many paparazzi are clicking your pictures or if you’re a celebrity’s grandson. They just want someone who fits the character perfectly.”

Bhat also advised aspiring actors to focus on their craft rather than chasing social media fame. “These directors trust talent. They want actors who will give their all to a character. I feel honoured that they’ve believed in me, even when people questioned their decisions. The industry often values superficial things like popularity or being a ‘style icon.’ But directors like Vikram and Anurag look beyond that.”
Despite limited projects, Bhat credits his success to these filmmakers who saw his potential. “They’ve proven that passion for storytelling and trust in talent outweigh the noise of trends and numbers,” he concluded.
