Ram Gopal Varma Reflects on Success and Mistakes After Rewatching Iconic Film Satya

Ram Gopal Varma reflects on Satya, vows to prioritize sincerity after success-induced creative arrogance

Ram Gopal Varma reflects on Satya’s success, admitting arrogance and vowing meaningful filmmaking ahead

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma recently shared an emotional reflection on his career after rewatching his iconic 1998 gangster drama Satya, which re-released in theaters on January 17. The film, often hailed as a game-changer in Indian cinema, brought Varma immense success. However, he admitted that the triumph left him drunk on success and arrogance, impacting the quality and intent of his subsequent works.

On January 15, Varma took to social media to pen a heartfelt confession about his journey since Satya. Watching the film again after 27 years moved him to tears. “By the time Satya was rolling to an end, I started choking with tears rolling down my cheeks. The tears were not just for the film but also for what happened since,” he wrote.

Varma likened filmmaking to giving birth, explaining how creators often fail to recognize the significance of their work while immersed in the creative process. He admitted to undervaluing Satya, dismissing it as “just another step” in his career, without pausing to appreciate its impact. Reflecting on his past choices, Varma acknowledged that the film’s success led to overconfidence and a shift in priorities. He confessed to creating films for “shock value, gimmicks, or technical wizardry,” rather than sincerity.

He also expressed guilt for letting down those who trusted him during his peak. “I became drunk not on alcohol but on my own success and arrogance,” Varma revealed. He emphasized that Satya should have been the benchmark for all his future projects and regretted not adhering to the standards it set.

In his emotional note, Varma urged filmmakers to avoid self-indulgence and measure their work against their best creations. He vowed to dedicate the remainder of his life to creating something as meaningful as Satya. “This truth I swear on Satya,” he concluded.

Satya, starring JD Chakravarthy, Manoj Bajpayee, Urmila Matondkar, and Saurabh Shukla, redefined Indian cinema with its gritty portrayal of the underworld. The film’s re-release has rekindled conversations about its legacy and Varma’s once-iconic storytelling.
