Delhi Elections: Women Voters Taking Control, But Female MLAs Still Missing
Women voters are increasingly taking center stage in Delhi’s electoral landscape, with many exercising their right to vote and making their voices heard. However, despite this surge in women’s participation, the number of female MLAs in the Delhi assembly remains disappointingly low. According to the Chief Electoral Officer, Delhi, various initiatives have been undertaken to encourage women’s participation in the electoral process, including the creation of State Steering Committee on Accessible Elections (SSCAE) to ensure that all voters, including women, have equal access to polling stations.
The ECI Notifications also highlight the importance of women’s participation in elections, with measures such as postal ballots and accessible polling stations being implemented to facilitate their voting experience. Moreover, the Commission’s Order dated 13.09.2022, emphasizes the need for registered unrecognized political parties to comply with statutory requirements, which could potentially lead to more women being represented in the electoral process.
Despite these efforts, the fact remains that women are underrepresented in the Delhi assembly. To address this issue, it is essential to encourage more women to participate in politics and take up leadership roles. This can be achieved through awareness campaigns and training programs that empower women to become active participants in the electoral process. By doing so, we can work towards creating a more inclusive and representative democratic system in Delhi. The CEO, Delhi has also organized various events, such as slogan writing competitions and poem competitions, to engage women and encourage their participation in the electoral process.
