Pregnant Woman’s Tragic Death and Five Critical Cases Spark Outrage Over Alleged Negligence at Midnapore Hospital
A tragic incident at Midnapore Medical College and Hospital has left behind the body of 21-year-old pregnant woman Mamoni Rui Das while five other patients are still fighting for their lives. An inquiry has been launched by West Bengal Health Department after the charge that expired saline was injected into patients. Now, a 10-member inquiry committee is scheduled to visit Medinipur to probe into it in details.
The issue came into the limelight after relatives of the affected patients filed a formal police complaint on Friday. Responding to it, the health department has directed the immediate replacement of the hospital’s saline stock and sought a detailed report from the college principal to ascertain the extent of negligence. While officials demand accountability for the expired saline, medical staffs have reportedly made claims that injections administered to the patients were inappropriate or unsafe to administer.

Das, who had given birth on Wednesday, experienced a rapid deterioration in her condition on Thursday and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Tragically, she passed away on Friday, leaving behind her newborn child. Meanwhile, other critically ill women, including one whose husband reported that her condition worsened after childbirth, have also been moved to the ICU for intensive care.
An uproar and outcry were seen following this shocking incident of negligence. Even the opposition, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), criticized Mamata Banerjee’s government, stating they were negligent. “How much more blood will stain the chief minister’s hands? West Bengal deserves real accountability, not hollow promises and PR stunts,” the BJP declared.

Relatives of patients who have been allegedly mismanaged are filled with anguish and frustration over the treatment meted out to their kith and kin in the hospital. The husband of one of those in a critical condition described his wife’s alarming condition after saline. “My wife gave birth to a baby on Friday, and then her urine stopped. Soon after, she was moved to the ICU. They have given some wrong saline. Something is wrong in the saline,” he said, voicing the fears shared by many.
This tragedy has underlined grave concerns about medical negligence and the quality of health services in government hospitals. The probe into this case will seek to determine if indeed expired or unsuitable saline was administered and whether responsibility would be held by those in charge for this lapse. In the meantime, justice and improved safeguards are what the bereaved families and the critically ill patients need to prevent such incidents in the future.
