Environmentalist Tulsi Gowda, Padma Shri awardee, passes away at 86, leaving an inspiring legacy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several leaders mourned the death of renowned environmentalist Tulsi Gowda, who passed away at 86 in her hometown in Karnataka. Known for her deep knowledge of forests and plants, Gowda was a Padma Shri awardee and affectionately called the Encyclopedia of Forest.

PM Modi expressed his grief on Tuesday, highlighting her immense contribution to environmental conservation. “Deeply saddened by the passing of Smt. Tulsi Gowda Ji. She dedicated her life to nurturing nature, planting thousands of saplings, and conserving the environment. Her work will continue to inspire generations to protect our planet,” the Prime Minister wrote on X . He also extended his condolences to her family and admirers.

Who Was Tulsi Gowda?

  1. Tulsi Gowda was born in Honnali village, Ankola Taluk, Karnataka. She belonged to the Halakki tribe, an indigenous community.
  2. She worked for over 30 years as a temporary volunteer in the forest department. Her commitment earned her a permanent position, and she retired at the age of 70.
  3. Despite lacking formal education, Gowda’s vast knowledge of forests and plants earned her the nickname Encyclopedia of Forest.
  4. Over a span of more than 60 years, she planted over 30,000 saplings and dedicated her life to protecting the environment.
  5. In 2021, the Government of India honored her with the Padma Shri, the nation’s fourth-highest civilian award.
