Donald Trump Targets High Tariffs by India, Promises Reciprocal Action

Donald Trump vows reciprocal tariffs on India over high duties, emphasizing fairness in trade relations

US President-elect Donald Trump has announced plans to impose reciprocal tariffs on countries, including India, that levy high duties on American products. Speaking at a press conference at Mar-a-Lago on Monday, Trump emphasized the need for fairness in global trade, stating, “If they tax us, we tax them.”

Trump pointed out that countries like India and Brazil impose significantly high tariffs on certain US goods, which he deemed unfair. “India charges 100% or more on some of our products. If they send a bicycle here, we should charge the same tariff they charge us for sending a bicycle there,” he said. The principle of reciprocity, Trump stressed, would be a major focus of his administration’s trade policies.

Trump’s comments came in response to a question about potential trade agreements with China, but he also highlighted India as an example of countries taxing US goods excessively. He reiterated that if foreign nations tax American products heavily, the US will respond with equivalent tariffs.

Howard Lutnick, Trump’s nominee for Commerce Secretary, echoed this stance. He stated, “Reciprocity will define our trade policies. How you treat us is how you should expect to be treated.”

The departing Biden administration, meanwhile, said it was certain that US-Indian ties will remain strong under Trump’s leadership. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell said that the US-India relationship is in “a very strong place.” He cited important recent interactions as proof of close collaboration, such as the QUAD conference in Delaware.

“Under the new administration, we are still optimistic about this relationship and think it will have bipartisan support,” Campbell continued.

The Biden administration’s efforts have set a solid foundation for ties with India, but Trump’s focus on imposing reciprocal tariffs could signal shifts in trade dynamics. Observers will watch closely to see how Trump’s policies impact the strategic and economic partnership between the two nations.

With Trump taking a firm stand on fair trade, countries like India may face new challenges in maintaining trade relations with the US under his leadership.
