Won’t Allow Our Land…’: Sri Lanka Assures India Amid China’s Hambantota Port Ops
Sri Lanka has assured India that it will not allow its land to be used against India’s security interests, amid concerns over China’s operations at the Hambantota port . This assurance comes after China’s 25,000-tonne satellite and ballistic missile tracking ship, Yuan Wang 5, was stationed at Hambantota on multiple occasions over the past two years .
India had expressed concerns over the docking of the Chinese vessel, citing its potential to track and survey Indian defense and nuclear installations in its Southern states . However, Sri Lanka has defended its decision to allow the vessel to dock, citing its “international obligations” and ruling out research activities for the vessel in Sri Lankan waters.

Despite these assurances, India remains wary of China’s growing influence in Sri Lanka and the Indian Ocean region. China’s investments and loans in Sri Lanka far outweigh India’s financial assistance, and India knows that it cannot compete with China’s economic might.

In this context, India’s response to the crisis is not only strategic and status-oriented but also symbolic, as its Indo-Pacific partners expect it to play a significant role in the region . India should continue with its diplomatic engagement and assistance to Sri Lanka, while also conveying a strong message to China that its interests in the region will not be compromised.
