Arvind Kejriwal Rules Out Alliance with Congress for Delhi Elections

Arvind Kejriwal confirms AAP will contest Delhi assembly polls solo, dismissing alliance rumors with Congress, emphasizing independence in elections.

Arvind Kejriwal Declares AAP to Contest Delhi Assembly Elections Solo, Rules Out Alliance with Congress

Arvind Kejriwal, chief of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), today has categorically stated that his party will contest independently for the Delhi assembly elections, doing away with rumors of forming an alliance with the Congress. Kejriwal said there is “no possibility of any alliance with Congress,” putting an end to speculation about a seat-sharing agreement.

The buzz regarding a possible deal had suggested that Congress might win 15 seats, one or two could go to other members of the INDIA bloc, and the rest would be kept open for AAP. However, Kejriwal has stuck to his position on never forming an electoral alliance with Congress, stating that AAP’s strategy was to contest elections on its own strength.

No Alliance with Congress in Previous Elections
Kejriwal’s decision follows the AAP’s pattern in previous elections, like Haryana Assembly polls earlier this year. The seat-sharing talks failed, although there had been initial discussions for an alliance within the INDIA bloc, and AAP will contest Haryana elections independently. Likewise, AAP skipped any coalition talks with Congress for the Delhi polls.

The latest also comes after a less than impressive performance for Maha Vikas Aghadi in Maharashtra, Congress is an alliance partner. In short, it is a very strategic shift by Kejriwal, especially after having successes under the AAP umbrella at the states of Delhi and Punjab to distance his party from recent Congress’s woes.
Comparative Strategies during Lok Sabha Elections
The AAP approach in the recently held Lok Sabha elections in Delhi was a short-term cooperation in the form of an understanding with Congress under the umbrella called the INDIA bloc. On four out of the seven Lok Sabha constituencies in the national capital, the parties contested each other.
Again, the alliance failed, as the BJP won on all seven seats.

In comparison, AAP contested on its own in Punjab and managed to win a clear majority in the state. Kejriwal’s party had already won the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections hands down by 92 of the 117 seats, turning power out of the hands of Congress.

AAP to Contest Solo in Focus
Kejriwal’s announcement reflects his confidence in AAP’s ability to contest and win elections independently. The party’s strategy in Delhi is a reflection of its overall goal of consolidating its position as a strong, self-reliant political force. As the elections approach, AAP will be able to focus on its governance record and policies to resonate with voters without the need for alliances.
