Farmers Demand Action: Renewed Protests for MSP Law and Other Issues

Farmers demand MSP law, debt waiver, land rights, and justice, protests intensify amid police violence

Farmers demand MSP law, debt waiver, justice for victims, and land rights; protests intensify nationwide

Farmers from across the country, under the banner of Samyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, have intensified their protest, launching the second phase of their movement. On February 13, they announced a march to Delhi, demanding urgent action on several long-pending issues, including a Minimum Support Price (MSP) guarantee law.

The protests follow the historic 378-day farmers’ movement of 2020-21, which led to the repeal of three contentious farm laws. The government had also promised to form a committee to address the MSP issue, but farmers allege no substantial progress has been made in two years despite symbolic protests.

Protesters allege police brutality during their peaceful march to Delhi, with reports of firing, tear gas, and pellet guns being used. This violence led to the death of a farmer, loss of eyesight for five others, and over 400 injuries.

Farmers have appealed to MPs, especially those whose parties had included these issues in their manifestos, to introduce a private member’s bill during the monsoon session of Parliament. Failure to act, they warn, will signal a lack of commitment to the farming community’s struggles.

The government is yet to respond decisively. Farmers remain steadfast, emphasizing their resolve to fight for their rights.
