TRAI assures users that new traceability rules will not cause delays in OTP deliveries, refuting rumors about disruptions in essential services.

TRAI Refutes Rumors of OTP Delivery Delays Amid New Message Traceability Rules, Assuring Smooth Transactions for Users Starting December 1, 2024

As December 1, 2024 will mark the day on which many were worried that one-time password (OTPs) regarding critical services like Aadhaar verification and net banking across India would get delayed as rumors started circulating through the social media, based upon which it was asserted by the rumors that delay due to the new set of regulations issued by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India was very much likely. The TRAI, however, came in a hurry and refuted the entire claims forwarded by its assessment as entirely false and confirmed that the time delivery of OTPs would not be affected.

TRAI, in a clarification that has been posted on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, denied the fake reports that labeled them “factually incorrect.”
TRAI assured users that its recently introduced message traceability guidelines will not hamper the delivery of OTPs and other critical messages. “The recent guidelines on traceability of messages are steps towards security measures. Users can rest assured that service delivery will not be hampered by this,” it said.

The misinformation started following reports that the new guidelines require telecom providers to trace the source of bulk messages and are going to cause a disturbance in OTP services. However, TRAI clarified that this was not the case at all and that the sole aim of these guidelines was curbing spam and fraudulent activities by making it easier to track the source of the message. The telecom authority stated that the rule would not cause any delay in message delivery, particularly for essential services like OTP-based authentication.

The new rules were supposed to be implemented on November 1, 2024. However, the deadline was extended to November 30, 2024, in order to allow telecom operators and other stakeholders to implement their systems properly. TRAI clarified that the necessary infrastructure for the implementation of the new rules was already available and that the extension of the deadline was only to ensure a seamless transition without any service disruption, including OTP transactions.

Besides this mandate on tracing messages, TRAI had been taking steps to deter spamming and ensure security across the board. The regulator had recently launched penalties regarding unauthorized promotional calls by disconnection and blacklisting offenders up to two years. Progress has already been seen toward this as complaints about these spam calls reduced by a 20% margin within August and October 2024.

The clarification by TRAI should, therefore, comfort the millions of users whose services would be disrupted with new measures for OTP authentication to facilitate secure online transactions.
