From Corporate Success to Spiritual Awakening: How Mohanji’s Journey from the Middle East to the Himalayas Transformed Him into a Global Humanitarian Leader
Mohanji is a contemporary spiritual leader, philanthropist, and humanitarian who is popular for his teachings on mindfulness, selflessness, and compassion. His life journey speaks of transformation, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to making the world a better place. Recently, Mohanji was honored with a prestigious environmental award by Deputy Minister Narend Singh of the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and Environment, Government of South Africa. But who is Mohanji, and what took him to this extraordinary journey? Let’s find out about this inspiring story.
Humble beginnings in Kerala
Born as Rajesh Kamath on February 23, 1965, in Kerala, Mohanji’s life began in a modest setting. Like many young individuals in India, he pursued his education with a vision for a brighter future. He completed his early schooling in Kerala and later earned a BA in Economics from Calicut University. Recognizing the importance of mastering English to achieve his aspirations, he pursued a postgraduate degree in English Literature.
With such an academic background, he prepared himself for a promising career. He joined the shipping industry with his qualifications and soon progressed through the ranks and was a leader with over 24 years of senior management experience in the Middle East. His arduous effort and sincerity were rewarded by a handsome package as a Divisional Head, in the salary range of lakhs. Mohanji seemed to have everything: a career in full bloom, financial security, and a happy family.
A Life-Altering Tragedy
In 1992, Mohanji married Saritha, and their lives were blessed with the arrival of their daughter, Ammu, in November 1995. Life seemed perfect, but fate had other plans. On August 23, 2000, a tragic road accident claimed the life of his four-year-old daughter, Ammu. The loss of his only child shattered Mohanji’s world and left him grappling with profound grief and emptiness.
Reflecting on Ammu’s life, Mohanji said, “Ammu was a divine soul who taught me the true essence of love and fatherhood. She was like a companion and mentor to me despite her young age. Her sudden death left me devastated and searching for deeper meaning in life.”
It marked the beginning of a series of personal and professional losses: the break-up of his marriage, losing his job, saving getting drained, and losing all the possessions he had. Divested of everything that had been meaningful to him, Mohanji began this introspective and spiritual journey.

After the loss of his daughter, Mohanji went to the silent Himalayas for solace. He felt he wanted to get away from the “world of noises” that had been created by active thoughts, relationships, and social pressures. His time in the mountains became a life-changing experience that provided him with clarity and purpose.
During his stay in the Himalayas, Mohanji went through deep meditation and introspection; gradually, he transformed the pain into a profound understanding of the impermanence of life and the interconnectedness of all beings. He bases his teachings on these experiences, which include living in an authentic manner and practicing ahimsa or non-violence in thoughts, words, and actions.
