Eknath Shinde resigns as Maharashtra CM amid uncertainty, Shiv Sena, BJP vie for leadership
Eknath Shinde resigned as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra on Tuesday, following the state’s recent assembly election results. The ruling Mahayuti alliance, which retained power in the election, has yet to decide on his successor. After submitting his resignation to Governor C P Radhakrishnan, Shinde was asked to continue in a caretaker role until a new Chief Minister is appointed.
The political drama revolves around the BJP’s claim to the CM post, which is strengthened by its victory in the election, where it won 132 seats, making it the largest party in the assembly. Despite this, Shiv Sena, which won 57 seats, has argued that the Chief Minister’s position should remain with their leader, Eknath Shinde, citing political arrangements like in Bihar, where the BJP is in a coalition with Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister from a smaller party.

Shiv Sena leaders have voiced strong support for Shinde’s continuation as Chief Minister. Party spokesperson Sheetal Mhatre emphasized that the Maratha community and many Shiv Sena lawmakers want Shinde to stay in office, especially ahead of upcoming local body elections. Minister Deepak Kesarkar added that under Shinde’s leadership, the Mahayuti alliance performed well in the polls and his leadership should continue.
However, Shinde, acknowledging the support from his followers, urged them not to gather outside his residence, Varsha, in Mumbai, or any other location to show support for his continuation. He thanked his supporters for their love and assured them that the alliance would form the government again. Despite the calls for his continued leadership, a final decision will be made by Shinde, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar, who are expected to reach a consensus.
Shinde became Maharashtra’s Chief Minister in 2022 after a rebellion against then-CM Uddhav Thackeray, joining forces with the BJP.
