Ajit Pawar Triumphs as Sharad Pawar Faces Career’s Worst Defeat in Maharashtra Elections
Ajit Pawar triumphs in Maharashtra elections, while Sharad Pawar faces career’s most significant defeat
Ajit Pawar’s NCP wins big, Sharad Pawar suffers career-low performance in Maharashtra elections 2024
Maharashtra’s 2024 elections marked a turning point in the political battle between uncle-nephew duo Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar. For Ajit Pawar, this victory signals the start of a new era, solidifying his position as a leader in his own right. For Sharad Pawar, however, it is the most challenging moment in his illustrious career.
In the first electoral test since the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) split in 2023, Ajit Pawar emerged victorious, securing 36 of the 59 seats his faction contested, achieving a 61.02% strike rate. In stark contrast, Sharad Pawar’s faction won just 15 out of 86 seats, with a dismal strike rate of 17.44%.
This dramatic outcome has left the two NCP factions on vastly different paths. Ajit Pawar’s victory is seen as a major achievement, establishing his independence from the Pawar family’s legacy. Sharad Pawar, on the other hand, faces questions about the future of his political career and his faction’s viability.

Ajit Pawar’s win was particularly significant in Baramati, the Pawar family’s stronghold, where he defeated his nephew Yugendra Pawar. This high-stakes battle drew the entire Pawar family into the campaign, with Sharad Pawar’s wife Pratibha and Supriya Sule’s daughter Revati canvassing for Yugendra.
Ajit Pawar focused on his decades of development work in Baramati, urging voters to back him in this crucial fight. His campaign paid off, despite the absence of support from key BJP or Shiv Sena leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Ajit Pawar downplayed Modi’s absence, saying it was a family matter that did not require outside intervention.
Speculation is now rife about Maharashtra’s next Chief Minister. While the BJP, which won 130 seats, is likely to lead the government, Ajit Pawar’s wife, Sunetra Pawar, has publicly endorsed her husband for the role.
The results not only signify a political shift within Maharashtra but also mark a family feud that has reshaped the NCP’s future. As Ajit Pawar celebrates his victory, Sharad Pawar faces an uncertain twilight in his political journey.
