BJP-led Mahayuti sweeps Maharashtra elections, Fadnavis highlights unity and Modi’s leadership as key
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies in the Mahayuti alliance are set for a sweeping victory in the Maharashtra assembly elections. By 12:45 PM on Saturday, data from the Election Commission showed the BJP leading in 125 seats, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) in 55, and the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in 38.
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, a key leader of the alliance, celebrated the early results. He reiterated the BJP’s campaign slogan, Ek Hain To Safe Hain, and added, “Modi Hai To Mumkin Hai” in a post on X . Fadnavis is leading from his constituency, Nagpur South West, by over 19,000 votes.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah congratulated Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Fadnavis for the alliance’s strong performance.
Fadnavis’ Political Journey
Devendra Fadnavis, 54, has had a remarkable political career. He began as the youngest mayor of Nagpur and rose to prominence in state politics. He became Maharashtra’s Chief Minister in 2014 after the BJP emerged as the single largest party, winning 122 seats in the assembly.
In 2019, his political journey took a dramatic turn when the Shiv Sena refused to join the BJP government without sharing the Chief Minister’s post. This led Fadnavis to form a brief alliance with NCP leader Ajit Pawar. However, this government collapsed in just 72 hours, and Fadnavis became the Leader of the Opposition.
In June 2022, Eknath Shinde, then a minister in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, rebelled with 39 Shiv Sena MLAs, reducing Uddhav Thackeray’s government to a minority. Thackeray resigned before a floor test, and the MVA government fell.
Fadnavis initially declined a role in the new BJP-Shiv Sena government but later returned as Deputy Chief Minister under Shinde, showcasing his loyalty to the BJP leadership.
As the Mahayuti alliance secures a commanding majority, Fadnavis remains a central figure in Maharashtra politics, reinforcing the BJP’s stronghold in the state.
