Ricky Ponting: I’m unsure about the reasons behind their chosen dates

Ricky Ponting, the ex-Australian cricketer and current Punjab Kings (PBKS) head coach, expressed his anger towards the Board of Control for Cricket in India for planning the IPL 2025 mega auction to clash with the start of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. As Ponting will be attending the PBKS auction, he is expected to be absent from his commentary role with Australia’s Channel 7 for the majority of the 1st IND vs AUS Test in Perth.

Ponting comment on auction

Ponting criticized the timing of the mega auction as ‘the worst possible situation’ because it will coincide with Day 3 and Day 4 of the Perth Test scheduled for November 24 and 25. Ponting told The Sydney Morning Herald that it is the most dreadful outcome for him and JL [Langer]. For the past few months, we sensed that it would likely occur during the break between the Test matches. The pressure is relieved for all players from both teams. Many players from each team are participating in the auction. He continued, I always believed it should be in that space as it would benefit everyone. However, I’m unsure about the reasons behind their chosen dates – it could be related to the game. The auction begins on air right after the game ends. It could possibly be related to broadcasting.

Justin Langer and Daniel Vettori

Ponting’s former teammate from Australia, Justin Langer, will also be absent from his commentary duties to attend the IPL 2025 mega auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Langer serves as the head coach for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). In addition to Ponting and Langer, Daniel Vettori, the assistant coach of Australia, will also be absent from the first Test match in order to attend the auction as the head coach of the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

Ponting schedule

I will arrive on the initial day and depart for Jeddah later on Friday night. The auction will take place on the 24th and 25th, and depending on how it goes, I will determine when I can come back.
