Dalit woman murdered in UP’s Karhal, family blames SP worker over BJP voting support
A 23-year-old Dalit woman’s body was found in a sack in Uttar Pradesh’s Karhal constituency on Monday, triggering a political uproar. Her family claims she was murdered for supporting the BJP in the ongoing bypolls.
The woman’s father alleged that a local Samajwadi Party (SP) worker, Prashant Yadav, had threatened her after she expressed support for the BJP. According to the father, Yadav visited their home three days ago and questioned her voting preference. When she said she would vote for the BJP’s lotus symbol, citing benefits like a house under the PM Awas Yojana, Yadav reportedly pressured her to vote for the SP’s cycle symbol instead.
Police have arrested Prashant Yadav and another accused, Mohan Katheria, based on the father’s complaint. Mainpuri district police chief Vinod Kumar confirmed that the case is being investigated. “The family believes she was killed because of her political preference,” he said.
The BJP launched a sharp attack on the Samajwadi Party over the incident. State BJP chief Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary, in a post on X , accused SP members of brutally murdering a Dalit daughter because she refused to support their party.

While senior SP leaders have not directly addressed the incident, the party’s Karhal candidate, Tej Pratap Yadav, called for a thorough investigation and strict action against the guilty. The SP’s official handle, meanwhile, accused the police of intimidating voters in the name of patrolling.

The tragedy has added to the tension in Karhal and other constituencies voting in the bypolls. Nine Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh are holding elections today, including Karhal, Katehari, Mirapur, Ghaziabad, Majhawan, Sisamau, Khair, Phulpur, and Kundarki. These seats fell vacant after their MLAs were elected to the Lok Sabha.
SP leader Akhilesh Yadav, who previously represented Karhal, has accused the police of obstructing voters. The BJP dismissed these allegations, claiming they reflect the SP’s fear of losing the elections.
The case has intensified the political blame game as voting continues in the state.
