Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi steals the show on the second day at the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, when he shares the limelight with Justin Trudeau of Canada and Joe Biden of the US during the family photo. Although it was momentarily captured that leaders were interacting, such instances remain a rare commodity considering the strained relations between India and Canada.

In the vast Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, the photograph captures the conclave of world leaders determined to deal with shared challenges. Modi, Trudeau, and Biden exchanged a few words while standing for a group photo with Biden standing symbolically between the two.

A frost-like chill settled down over relations between India and Canada following their official meeting.
This meeting comes in the backdrop of strained India-Canada relations that reached a low point after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Indian government agents of involvement in the assassination of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar late last year. Nijjar, who had been declared a terrorist by India, was killed outside a gurdwara in Surrey, Canada. India strongly dismissed the allegations against it as baseless and absurd.

Adding fuel to the fire is that the Canadians have lately discovered Indian envoy and five other diplomats as “persons of interest” in connection with Nijjar’s murder. India retaliated by withdrawing its diplomats and expelling six Canadian diplomats from New Delhi.

India has also condemned Canada for taking no action to curb the operations of Khalistan supporters who openly demand the fragmentation of Indian territory. Such operations have only added fuel to the already fragile diplomatic ties.

Attacks on Indian Community in Canada
The tensions have also spilled over into the Indian diaspora in Canada. Earlier this month, a Hindu temple near Toronto was attacked by pro-Khalistan radicals during a consular camp organized by Indian officials. The act, condemned as deliberate and cowardly, led Modi to demand justice and call for the Canadian government to uphold the rule of law.

Such acts of violence will never weaken India’s resolve. We expect the Canadian government to ensure justice and uphold the rule of law,” Modi emphasized in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

G20 Summit: A Momentary Pause
While the G20 Summit was an occasion for collaborative global politics, the short meeting between Modi and Trudeau points to the depth of the diplomatic standoff that remains. The Rio event provided no official resolution, but some important light on deep personal differences came to the surface.
