BJP accused of cash distribution before Maharashtra polls, opposition demands Election Commission action amid political drama
High drama unfolded in Maharashtra just hours before voting as BJP leaders faced allegations of distributing cash to influence voters. The incident occurred at a hotel in Virar, Palghar district, where BJP General Secretary and former minister Vinod Tawde and Nalasopara BJP candidate Rajan Naik were reportedly present.
The Bahujan Vikas Aghadi (BVA) claimed BJP leaders were distributing cash envelopes to sway voters. Kshitij Thakur, sitting MLA from the BVA, arrived at the hotel with his supporters, leading to a heated confrontation. Videos that have since gone viral show BVA supporters holding up currency notes in front of Tawde and alleging envelopes containing cash and diaries were recovered from the venue.

The Congress also weighed in, sharing a video from the scene and accusing the BJP of using money to influence the elections. In a post on X , the Congress demanded the Election Commission take strict action, stating, Even top BJP leaders are involved.
The BJP dismissed the accusations, labeling them baseless and a political stunt by the BVA ahead of the polls. The party stated that Tawde was merely conducting a meeting with party workers to discuss election preparations. BJP leaders have called for an Election Commission investigation, including a review of CCTV footage from the venue, to clarify the matter.
Maharashtra is set to vote on Wednesday in a high-stakes election following significant political upheaval. The last Assembly elections saw the BJP and undivided Shiv Sena secure a majority with 161 seats. However, their alliance broke over differences on rotational chief minister ship, leading to the formation of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government by the Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction), Congress, and NCP (Sharad Pawar faction).
The MVA government collapsed in 2022 after Eknath Shinde led a split in the Shiv Sena, aligning with the BJP. Later, Ajit Pawar’s faction joined the ruling coalition, dividing the NCP further.
This election sees bitter contests between opposing factions of Shiv Sena and NCP, making it a prestige battle for both alliances.
