Celebrating Guru Parab 2024-A tale of Devotion

Guru Parab is a religious Sikh festival, which is known similarly as Guru Nanak Jayanti and is widely celebrated with much faith all over the world. Devoted to revered Sikh saint and the first Sikh Guru of the religious group known as Sikhs, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, this day in 2024 is celebrated for the 555th time. Guru Parab is not only a festival of Tenth Guru but it is also a time when people of different castes pray for Guru Nanak and enjoy the bumper harvest they got with the help of Guru Nanak’s principle of equality, compassion and selfless service.

Perhaps the most noticeable of Guru Parab is the praise, wherein the nagar kirtans, or the religious processions are most magnificent. Nagar kirtans are performed by the Panj Pyare, the Five Beloved Ones, clad in traditional dress are succeeded by devotees chanting hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy book. Streets are filled with the milk of enthusiastic colorful plates, devotion, joyous songs and regular beating of drums while devotees move on the roads in groups and in prayers. This also helps many participants to also exhibit the courage and skills involved in GATKDA, a Sikh martial arts.

A week prior to Guru Parab, gurdwaras bloom with lights, whereas akhand path is conducted resulting in a holy environment. On Guru Parab simple ceremonies including the early morning prayers and hymns and sermons being made on Guru Nanak’s life and his teachings are observed in the gurdwaras. The offered also worshippers come to listen, recollect, and be thankful to the Guru’s divine preaching.

The day also involves langar which is another act of community kitchen where people are tasted and served food by volunteers imitating kindness, servitude and equality as embraced by Guru. The above gesture of serving the community becomes a reaffirmation of the relations of the community and therefore makes Guru Parab a day of homage and Oneness.
