Donald Trump picks ex-US spy John Ratcliffe as CIA chief, Mike Huckabee as ambassador to Israel - Hindustan Times

Within a very short period since his election as the US President, Donald Trump has been moving briskly to prepare his new government. He started releasing key appointments. Two of his recent appointments are ex-director of national intelligence John Ratcliffe as the next head of the CIA, and a newly picked head of US envoy for Israel. For his new role as ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee has been elected. Stephen Witkoff is another long-time friend of Trump who has been appointed special envoy in the Middle East.

Return of John Ratcliffe as CIA Head
Now, president Trump will probably give the charge to John Ratcliffe to head the CIA. John Ratcliffe is a former congressman of the Republican party of Texas and also the director of national intelligence in Trump’s first term. He has had experience from the days of the US intelligence community leading during COVID-19, and that places him as a familiar face in national security circles.

However, his tenure has not been without controversy. He would face criticism from Democrats over declassifying Russian intelligence just before the 2020 election. The intelligence contained some potentially damaging information about Democrats during the 2016 campaign, though Ratcliffe said its accuracy was questionable. His nomination would need confirmation in the Senate, where those kinds of controversies can rise again.

Role as Ambassador to Israel to Mike Huckabee
Mike Huckabee, that man who, due to his very strong support for Israel, has been appointed as the latest ambassador to that Middle Eastern country. A strong supporter of Israel for many years, Huckabee often voiced out his sentiments about Israel, especially when such tense days occurred in the region. The nomination resonates with President Donald Trump’s plank that vows to mend the ties between the US and Israel, particularly as the country maintains its continued military activities against Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon. There have been notable endorsements of Huckabee’s appointment from pro-Israel figures; his former ambassador to Israel, David Friedman, stood by his appointment.

Steven Witkoff as Special Envoy to the Middle East
Say hello to Steven Witkoff: The newly minted special envoy to the Middle East is a Florida-based real estate investor and longtime Donald Trump friend who has leveraged his close personal ties to Trump into related business opportunities in the New York real estate market.
It is likely to advise the Trump administration on diplomatic efforts in the region as the US seeks to play a pivotal role in the on-going peace negotiations and regional security concerns.

With these key appointments, Trump is moving rapidly to form his new administration ahead of Inauguration Day on January 20, 2025.
