Brampton Hindu Temple Cancels Consular Event Amid High Threat of Protests, Highlighting Security Concerns for Canadian Hindu Community
The Brampton Triveni Mandir in Canada has cancelled its planned consular event due to the growing concern over violent protests there. This event, organised by the Consulate General of India at Toronto, was scheduled for November 17 within the series of camps that have been held for giving Life Certificates on pensionary matters. The temple received an alarming warning from Peel Regional Police, with the threat level that violent protests would become extremely high and imminent, thereby cancelling the event.
In a statement, the temple authorities said that the decision was taken with concern for the safety of devotees, visitors to the temple, and the general public. Commenting on the situation prevailing nowadays, they said, “We are deeply saddened that Canadians now feel unsafe coming to Hindu Temples in Canada.” This cancellation has raised concerns about security and safety among the Canadian Hindu community who, following the increased tensions, now feel vulnerable.
This cancellation followed a series of clashes between protestor groupings and devotees at another Hindu temple in Brampton. Protestors, carrying Khalistani flags, had disrupted an event at the Hindu Sabha temple, which had also been co-organized with the Indian Consulate, on November 3. It was in this context that the Consulate General of India had to cancel several other consular camps as it failed to get adequate security guarantees from Canadian authorities.

The Indian government looked at these developments and was concerned about the safety of Indian nationals in Canada and was quite scathing with condemnations of the attack and asked that the perpetrators be prosecuted as a reflection of the growing strain in diplomatic relations between India and Canada. Tense relations: They are due to allegations made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that India is involved in the murder of Khalistan separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, which India has vigorously rejected as “absurd.”.
These developments only speak volumes regarding how problematic the presence of pro-Khalistan elements within Canada has become; a subject matter India has been loudly addressing. Both the Canadian Hindu community and Indian nationals in Canada will live in fear, with greater hopes of stronger security measures as well as resolving the existing conflict between both the nations.
