Anaya Bangar, formerly known as Aryan and the son of former India cricketer Sanjay Bangar, recently shared her journey of self-discovery through hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in a viral Instagram post. In a heartfelt message, Anaya described the process of embracing her true self as the greatest victory of all. The post featured old photos with her father, as well as former Indian captains MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, but was later deleted.

In the Instagram post, Anaya, a left-handed batter like her father, reflected on the challenges of self-acceptance, which she likened to her journey as an athlete. Every step has required strength, she said, from early mornings on the pitch to dealing with doubts and criticisms.

She described her path to authenticity as demanding substantial sacrifices. Despite the challenges she faced, Anaya also talked about letting go of the ease of fitting in and defending her identity.

Before her transition, Anaya played for Islam Gymkhana in Mumbai’s local cricket scene and represented Hinckley Cricket Club in Leicestershire, England. However, she admitted that her journey to self-acceptance has come with difficult sacrifices, especially regarding her cricket career. In a follow-up post, Anaya expressed concerns about how HRT has impacted her physical abilities, including a loss in muscle mass, strength, and muscle memory—skills vital for her performance on the cricket field.

Anaya addressed the painful reality that these changes are limiting her ability to play the sport she loves, describing it as something slipping away from her. She highlighted the lack of established guidelines and supportive policies for transgender women in cricket, urging for changes that would allow athletes like herself to pursue their passion without compromising their identity.
