Chhath Puja, which Is with utmost devotion performed In Bihar Is a colorful festival which is dedicated to the worship of the sun god Surya and Chhathi Maiya who Is considered the sister of Surya and a harbinger of wealth and health. This festival is known to be carried out predominantly by the people of Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern part of Uttar Pradesh only, though the historical testimony suggests that it was first performed by Goddess Sita in order to express her gratitude and thankfulness in Treta Yuga as Chhath Puja.
Hear stories say that after the return of Ram and Sita from their 14 years of vanvas, they celebrated this puja in Ayodhya only. It is said that Sita had worshipped the, Sun God in this ritual to convey her and her husband’s safe return to the kingdom and to seek the Gods blessings for everyone’s well being. This great act of thankfulness created a remarkable status to move people from any part of the country more particularly in Bihar to adopt Chhath Puja in their day to day life.

Chhath Puja thus entails four days or four rituals through which Chhath devotees have to fast, take bath, and stand in water facing the sun in rivers to pray in the morning and evening. The devotion that people display – some of them wade in the water for many hours, reveals social and religious ties of the population to the festival. To celebrate Chhath, Bihari families congregate themselves to pay their respect to the setting and the rising sun to signify rebirth.

Indeed, Chhath has transmuted from being just a festival, it is today an identity and the symbol of Biharis’ simplex, pure and united living. This year also Bihar and other districts, and the world celebrate the function of Chhath Puja is a depiction of devotion and remembrance of ancient tradition of worshipping Goddess Sita which is a tradition of many centuries.
