On Wednesday, former US President Barack Obama urged a peaceful handover of power and congratulated Donald Trump on defeating Democratic opponent Kamala Harris in the presidential election.

“Clearly, this is not the result we were hoping for,” Barack Obama stated in his remarks. However, he continued, “living in a democracy is about accepting the peaceful transfer of power and realizing that our viewpoint won’t always prevail.”

Barack Obama proposed a number of economic factors that contributed to Kamala Harris’ loss. “America has been through a lot over the last few years — from a historic pandemic and price hikes following the pandemic, to rapid change and the feeling a lot of folks have that, no matter how hard they work, treading water is the best they can do,” Barack Obama said in the statement, echoing what he said during the campaign. “Those circumstances have posed challenges for democratic leaders globally, and last night shown that America is not exception.
