Kharna, the second day of Chhath Puda is a very pious day where people offer their devotion and remain on fast throughout the day. Kharna the second day of Chhath Puja that is observed by devotes mainly in the Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and the nearby areas The Kharna is the second day dedicated to the Chhath Puja festival in Hinduism. This evening is devoted to purity and faith that devotees have to divine forces, including Surya and Chhathi Maiya – the goddess of fertility.

On this day devotees undergo a nirjala fast which is a waterless fast that is held from dawn to dusk. The fast is very harsh and demands spiritual and material stamina and that definitely speaks about the dedication and seriousness of the followers. Before the sun sets they make a prayer offering or prasad for the break of the fast. This evening meal is simple yet incredibly meaningful: Offering sweets like jaggery rice kheer puris and bananas are some of the Traditional invites which depicts Humility, Purity & fun. These are a type of preparation that is done under very clean conditions and much devotion and it is a family affair.

First of all, the Kharna prasad is offered to the Sun God for the fulfillment of life. The leftover food along with fruits offerings are given as prasadam to the family and other devotees after finishing their prayers and then amygra – the consumed food offering is prepared to break the fast. This act is lucky and it is tradition to consider every part of it as a blessing, health and prosperity.

Kharna is followed by the evening of chanting, rituals and prayers that work up a spiritual environment throughout the night. People have come together to pay respect to their fore-fathers and to thank the gods for the bounty of nature for the blessings they expect in the coming year. This religious night of Chhath Puja on the second day of the festival tends to establish a spiritual base for the final Pooja practices of Chhath Puja.
