Thus, Chhath Puja, a festival in which the Sun God, Surya and his consort, Usha are especially worshipped, is of tremendous importance to the devotees, particularly in Bihar and Jharkhand and some parts of Uttar Pradesh. Chhath Puja, similarly takes four days and is devoted, intense with fasting and standing in water and offering prayers at both sunrise and sunset.

This year Chhath Puja will be on November 06 to November 09, 2024 Chhath Puja celebration will begin on Wednesday. Each day has its own importance and set of rituals:

Nahay Khay (November 6) –

On the first day, the body and home are cleansed. They take bath in sacred rivers, even clean the house, and take Sattvic (pure) food only.

Lohanda and Kharna (November 7) –

Which is the second day of fast; it is an intense fast. Bhakts will make a food offering where rice and jaggery kheer is common, and offer the food after dark.

Poush Shukla Dashami (November 8) –

On this day women perform puja of the setting sun or Sandhya Arghya. They stand in water bodies and offer Surya some oblations during sun down, the gesture is an expression of thanksgiving.

Usha Arghya (November 9) –

On the final day, devotees do not stand fasting after performing the rituals of prayers to the sun at the break of the dawn. The Chhath Puja devotees celebrate this day by ending the rituals and fasting of four days Chhath Puja.

Significance of Chhath Puja

The festival represents adoration of the sun god and its period can be considered a time to pray and be devoted to nature. People are belangous towards Surya for nourishment on the earth and pray to protect and fulfill a prosperous life. The timings of the sunrise and the sunset are important for Sandhya Arghya and Usha Arghya puja. In 2024, sunset on November 8 is expected around 5:On November 8, 2005 the sunset at 7 p.m., and on the next day at 3 p.m., there will be full moon and at 25 p.m., the sky will be dark and on the next day at 6:32 a.m., the it will be sunrise. These timings may however vary depending on the location of the project.
