Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing Greg ‘Joz’ Joswiak wasn’t kidding, when he’d warned the world late last week, that this was going to be a busy time with Mac refreshes. Second day of this week, and following the iMac refresh, it is time for a wholesome generational switch for the Mac mini. Secondly, the Mac Mini which is a full-fledged computing device, is now almost as small as an Apple TV 4K. Is there any Windows PC that comes close to this sort of a form factor, with a chip as powerful as the M4? Not even close. That’s even before we get to the specifics of Apple Intelligence, with its envisioned on-device compute as well as Private Cloud Compute.

You can select between an M4 or M4 Pro chip within the 5-inch-wide, 5-inch-deep, and merely 1.96-inch-tall dimensions. In contrast, the Apple TV 4K’s well-known puck design is 1.22 inches in height and nearly 4 inches in width and depth. The last update to the Mac mini using the M2 series CPUs was quite some time ago. Is the new Mac mini going to be so portable that you could carry this puck-shaped computer about and connect it to a TV or other display? Theoretically, it is quite feasible.

The power efficiency of Apple silicon and a novel new thermal architecture enable the new Mac mini to deliver enormous performance in an incredibly compact design. The Mac mini is more capable and versatile than ever thanks to the performance of the M4 and the new M4 Pro chip, improved front and rear connectivity, and the introduction of Apple Intelligence, according to John Ternus, senior vice president of Hardware Engineering at Apple.
According to Apple, the latest Mac mini is up to six times faster than its predecessors despite being a twentieth of the size of the prior model. In addition to two USB-C connections and a 3.5MM headphone jack at the front, the device has three Thunderbolt connectors, HDMI, and Gigabit Ethernet at the back. The Thunderbolt port specifications, however, vary depending on the processor you select; the M4 has Thunderbolt 4 ports, whilst the M4 Pro users have Thunderbolt 5 ports.
