According to officials with knowledge of the situation, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has completed a ₹1,144 crore proposal for the replacement and improvement of the 400,000 LED streetlights spread over the four zones that span the South Delhi area. On Monday, the house of councillors will be presented with a policy proposal in this area.

In the south Delhi region, the MCD has control over four zones: South, Central, West, and Najafgarh. More than 396,970 public streetlight units were changed during the 2014 commencement of the project to replace the sodium-light-based system in these four zones. However, the company’s seven-year contract period ended in December of last year, and this year’s one-year extension period also ends in December. An official with knowledge of the situation stated that there is no more room for additions.

According to MCD, an LED fitting should last 12 years, however because of exposure and environmental factors, it only lasts 8 to 9 years. Maintaining such antique fixtures with frequent malfunctions is quite challenging. The plan states that replacing all of these outdated lighting with new ones will eliminate the problem of frequent outages and save energy because there are now greater luminous efficacy fixtures available. The necessity to replace fixtures that were introduced in prior years, such as 14,414 in 2020, 19,112 in 2021, and 13,023 in 2022, is not made clear.
