Shah Rukh Khan: The King of Romance Who Surprisingly Dislikes Love Stories and Prefers Thrilling Action in His Film Roles

Shah Rukh Khan hates love stories, reveals director Nikkhil Advani: "Shah Rukh Khan likes 'thrill'..."

Bollywood’s “King of Romance,” Shah Rukh Khan, has left an incredible trail with films like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Mohabbatein, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. His love scenes have made him the darling icon in Indian cinema, but the director, Nikkhil Advani, recently came out making a shocking admission: Shah Rukh Khan actually hates love stories. In the interview with Cyrus Says, Nikkhil said he is often conversing with the actor. He mentioned that even if Khan can be romanticized, he wants to do much more than what people define as love stories.

Nikkhil states that Shah Rukh has mentioned that he detests such regular love stories many times. He said, “Karan and Adi only do love stories; let us do something different.” This is a sentiment that underlines a desire for creative diversity that goes beyond the romantic roles that have defined much of Khan’s career. Interestingly, while he is famously associated with romance, his favorite films tell a different story. Nikkhil said that Shah Rukh liked Dil Se, Hey Ram, and Darr, where there was much drama and complications in the story. He particularly loved Ram Jaane, which he vividly remembered when Shah Rukh donned a very famous headband in that movie.

Nikkhil further explained the excitement penchant of Shah Rukh, adding that he gives “thrill credits” to some of his movies. For instance, when he was doing Kuch Kuch Hota Hai he approached that basketball sequence in a fairly intense way as an action scene, whereas it was otherwise just a choreographed piece. This reflects how Shah Rukh likes to create thrills even in romantic situations.

The director shared an interesting anecdote about the expectations of Shah Rukh while filming Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. He had heard that he was going to do a helicopter grand entry, so he was expecting to have an action-packed leap from the helicopter. However, he just had to step down on the ground. That’s an instance of his eagerness for adrenaline-infused storytelling.

In Sujoy Ghosh’s King, Shah Rukh Khan will be interpreted differently. He will play the mafia kingpin with Suhana Khan as his protégée. Such is all set to be a departure for Shah Rukh Khan from his usual romantic roles. This new project seems to bring the King of Romance closer to his dream of embracing exciting plots and stories, which is a thing he always wanted to do, far from love stories.
