On Friday, the US Department of Homeland Security announced that Indian nationals who were in the US illegally have been returned to India with the cooperation of the Indian government. The DHS stated that Immigration and Customs Enforcement sent a charter flight to India on October 22.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with the help of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), organized a significant charter flight to deport Indian citizens without legal grounds to stay in the U.S. to India on October 22, according to a statement by DHS. It further stated that this week’s flight shows that the Department is still dedicated to maintaining ongoing collaboration with the Indian government and other global partners in order to decrease and prevent irregular migration and combat human smuggling collectively.

Senior official remarks

Kristie A. Canegallo, the senior official acting as Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security, stated that Indian nationals in the US without legal grounds face quick deportation, and migrants should not believe smugglers’ false promises. From June 2024, the DHS has sent back or taken out more than 160,000 people, with over 495 international repatriation flights to more than 145 countries, including India.

It was stated that the department frequently communicated with foreign governments worldwide to allow the return of their citizens who had no legal right to stay in the US.
