Zomato and Swiggy Raise Platform Fees to ₹10, Sparking Outrage Among Food Lovers Amid Festive Season Rush

Food lovers unhappy as Zomato hikes platform fee to ₹10, Swiggy follows suit | Trending - Hindustan Times

When foodies are crying foul, something is seriously amiss. Online food delivery platforms Zomato and Swiggy recently hiked their platform fees to ₹10. The decision taken by them during the festive rush has irked many customers who feel that ordering food is becoming expensive again. Both Zomato and Swiggy would be competing with each other to take up the augmented demand that arises during festivals; however, the outcry in itself hints that their strategies are not in tandem with customer expectations.

Early this week, Zomato had increased the platform charge from ₹2 per order in August 2023 to ₹4 in January 2024. Social media, especially X, reacted quickly with criticism. Users pointed out the trend of increasing food delivery cost and complained that ordering in has now become prohibitively expensive. Many questioned the logic behind the increasingly large number of charges accompanying an otherwise simple order of food. “Food ordering started with free delivery; now we have to contend with GST, delivery fees, packing charges and now platform fee,” comments finfluencer Ravisutanjani, echoing the frustration of so many.

As the festive season is soon to set in, both Zomato and Swiggy find themselves between a rock and a hard place. On the one hand, they wish to corner all the profits but find that it might alienate their base of customers. It has to be seen how long the loyal patrons would carry on with the rising cost of food delivery in place.
