Tensions Escalate at Jamia Millia Islamia as Groups Clash During Diwali Celebrations, Resulting in Police Intervention on Campus
The campus of Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi witnessed an ugly turn of events on Diwali night when two groups clashed as students made a beeline to participate in the festive event of the university. The disturbance broke out around 7:30 PM, coinciding with the ABVP’s annual Diwali event that was being organized by the student wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party. According to reports, this trouble began when members of some group started vandalizing the rangolis and decorations done by the students of ABVP, which then turned into a physical clash.

Social media uploads have captured scenes of people raising slogans as many students assert that the other group created a disturbance during Diwali celebrations by raising slogans like “Palestine Zindabad.” Within hours, the campus security and local police were rushed to the scene to regain order outside Gate No. 7 of the campus.
The first gaiety, in a way to be seen as reveling in festive fervor, quickly turned into chaos as both groups started sloganeering and hurling accusations at each other. Eyewitnesses said that things worsened when members of the opposing group kicked over alleged diyas for having the festival and the sacredness of it disrupted. Deputy Commissioner of Police Southeast Ravi Kumar said that both groups were sloganeering at each other as the situation became tensed.

The problem was finally brought under control with the intervention of the campus security personnel. However, the police maintained a heavy presence around the university during the night as they watched the unfolding events and kept students safe. The ABVP has released a statement saying that investigations are on to find out who is responsible for the clash. Following the aftermath of this incident, the university community will digest other developments explaining events that occurred in what was supposed to be a celebration day.
